Glasgow City’s six-match Scottish Building Society SWPL1 winning streak came to an end as they lost out to Rangers at Broadwood Stadium.
Rangers took the lead after 19 minutes with the first real chance of the game. Megan Bell picked up the ball on the left edge of the box, took a touch inside and curled one beyond Lee Alexander.
City then had three good chances to level things up within five minutes but couldn’t get the better of Jenna Fife.
First, Hayley Lauder delivered a cross from the left to the near post for Nicole Robertson who could find the target. From the resulting goal kick, Fife played the ball straight to Robertson who set up Shine but her effort from the edge of the box was saved.
Then Sharon Wojcik cut in from the left hand side and fired a shot straight into the arms of Fife.
On 33 minutes, the away side doubled their lead. Nicola Docherty played the ball in from the left for Kirsty Howat who shot through a raft of bodies into the bottom corner.
Moments before half time, it was three when a long ball through the middle bounced perfectly for Zoe Ness to chip it over the advancing Alexander.
On 51 minutes, sub Brogan Hay played the ball low across the six yard box for Lizzie Arnot to turn it home.
City forged their first real opportunity of the second half on 63 minutes when Aoife Colvill drove forward on the left before crossing for Robertson. However, the ball was deflected up into the path of sub Maddie Fulton whose shot was saved.
A corner on 74 minutes saw Carly Girasoli turn the ball home at the near post.
Four minutes later, Clare Shine just wasn’t able to find the net from close range after a good ball in from Lauren Wade. From the resulting corner, Jo Love’s shot went over the bar.
Next up for City on Wednesday is the return leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League last 32 tie against Sparta Praha. It’s all to play for at Broadwood Stadium as the Czech side take a one goal lead after the first leg with the match live on BBC Alba.
