City exit UWCL after narrow Servette defeat

Glasgow City were knocked out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after a narrow defeat at Broadwood Stadium.

Priscila Chinchilla gave City an early lead but goals either side of half time from Jade Boho Sayo and Sandy Maendly sent Servette through to the Group Stage.

City had a perfect start in the Cumbernauld sun when Niamh Farrelly won a header in the middle of the park to flick the ball into the path of the onrushing Chinchilla who finished past Ines Pereira in the Servette goal.

City had the chance to make it two when the home side broke from a Servette corner but Pereira denied Fulutudilu in a one-on-one.

Servette equalised shortly before half time when the referee awarded an indirect free kick in the City six yard box following a pass back and Jade Boho slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

The Swiss side nearly made it two minutes later but good defending from City blocked a number of attempts on goal from the visitors.

Servette took the lead at the start of the second half when Maendly headed home from close range after Lee Alexander had tipped Daina Bourma’s shot onto the crossbar.

It could of, and arguably should have, been three for Servette midway through the second half when Jade broke and played the ball across the face of goal for Elodie Nakkach but she could only drag her shot wide.

City tried to find an equaliser to send the tie into extra time but to no avail.

Glasgow City are next in action on Sunday live on BBC Alba as we travel to face last season’s runners-up Celtic at the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie.
