Aleigh Gambone: 'We Did Our Job and Got It Done'

There is no doubt in Aleigh Gambone's mind on how important Fridays's win against Celtic was for our SWPL title hopes. The 2-1 victory at New Douglas Park, the midfielder says, can only help bring good momentum.

Under the lights in Hamilton, Leanne Ross and her side picked up a vital three points thanks to goals from City's Brenna Lovera and Kimberley Smit.

The result keeps City in third place, now with 57 points, but within touching distance of second-placed Rangers who have only one point more, and Hibernian at the summit, where they sit with 60 points.

"It was an important one," Gambone reflects. "We needed the three points and we got them. We did our job and got it done.

"These three points can be very important for the rest of the season. Each game is important, so we're really happy with the result."

Gambone, who was voted our Sponsors Player of the Match on Friday night, certainly played her part in the victory. It was her who assisted Lovera's opener.

There may have been questions whether the goal scorer intended to shoot or cross, but there can be no denying the terrific pass from Gambone which threaded her team-mate through down the left flank.

But whether Lovera's effort was a shot or a cross, it ended up in the back of the net. An important moment in the game midway through the first half.

"Brenna said she shot it!" the American says with a laugh. "I believe her! Brenna is a goal scorer.

"We needed that goal; it was so important. It really helped with our momentum in the first half. We dominated the first half and it was a really big goal for us in that sense and that gave us a platform for the rest of the game."

The hosts may have levelled the match through Saoirse Noonan just before the hour mark, but there would be no settling for a draw. Three points were the aim at New Douglas Park, and City were determined to leave with nothing less.

We fought until the very end and reaped our reward in the 86th minute when Smit prodded home the winning goal.

"When they got the tying goal, none of our heads went down," Gambone says. "We knew we had it in us to score and we knew we needed to. We did our job."

When we return to action after the international break in mid April, it is set to be a busy month with four SWPL games - two of which are midweek - and a Scottish Cup semi-final clash at Hampden.

And the result against Celtic, Gambone says, will provide a positive springboard heading into such a decisive period of the campaign.

"You couldn't put it any better; the result can carry us into the next part of the season after the international break with really good momentum," Gambone adds. "We will go into the next block of games with positivity, belief and a whole lot of character."

Indeed, those are the required ingredients to compete in a closely-fought title race.
