Amy Muir: 'It's Where The Club Needs To Be'

City co-captain Amy Muir is ready and raring to give her all as the club look to progress through UEFA Champions League qualifying, starting with tomorrow's Second Qualifying Round semi-final clash against hosts FK Austria Wien.

The defender, who was recently named skipper this season alongside goalkeeper Lee Gibson, is focused on helping the club achieve the goal of reaching the newly-introduced league phase of the European competition.

But, to get there, Muir knows a stern challenge awaits with City needing to overcome Austria Wien in the semi-final. The reward for a win is a meeting with FC Minsk in the final of second round qualifying.

"Last season, a big aim for us was - as it is every year - to qualify for the Champions League," Muir said. "It's where the club needs to be and it's where we all want to be.

"To get there is really important, but now we've got these big games. We're taking it one game at a time.

"It's going to be a big challenge and different from what we face each week in the league, but it's something we just need to relish, look forward to and obvisouly go show the best of ourselves because if we do that we get the best chance of getting through."

Since joining Glasgow City, Muir has represented the club six times in Champions League qualifying across two seasons.

From those experiences, she knows the attributes that will be needed to help get us through the difficult test that we will face at the Franz Horr Stadium this evening.

"It's a bit of the unknown," Muir added. "When you play domestically, it's the same teams and you kind of get an idea of the opposition over the years.

"For these games, you need to prepare as best you can with limited knowledge and they could obviously produce something different than we maybe expected. We need to be open minded and to be able to adapt.

"The main thing is we need to expect a physical match. We need to be ready physically and be ready to be adaptable on the day.

"In Europe, it's always going to be hard. They are strong, fast players, and they will move the ball well. If we can match that, it gives us a good starting point."

Whilst speaking to the media, the Scotland international also discussed what it means to be named co-captain with long-serving goalkeeper Gibson, with Muir wearing the armband in our most recent Scottish Women's Premier League win against Aberdeen.

"First of all I was really proud," Muir said. "I joined just over three seasons ago now and I've loved it. I've settled really well and feel at home here.

"I'm proud to wear the armband if I'm given it and to help the team, but for me, it doesn't change too much in terms of how I am and how I want to play."
