Glasgow City bowed out of the Sky Sports Cup at the Quarter Final stage after a tightly contested encounter at New Douglas Park ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat following a goalless 120 minutes.
There were returns to the starting line up for Kimberley Smit and Katie Lockwood for a game always destined to go to the wire and one which would switch from end to end but would find both sides struggling to find the finishing touches in the final third.
Emily Whelan's effort from close range was the best of the chances in the opening period for the visitors as Celtic looked to generate opportunities on the counter.
Both side's made changes in the second period as the game continued to swing from penalty box to penalty box but it was an afternoon where the defences would ultimately prove to be on top and there was an air of inevitability about the penalty-shoot out that would prove to be decisive as extra time rumbled on.
After Maria McAneny hit the post for the home side a pair of Kelsey Daugherty saves from Natalia Wrobel and Nicole Kozlova gave the hosts the advantage.
It was left to Natalie Ross to score the winning penalty and book Elena Sadiku's side spot in the semi-finals.
League leaders Glasgow City now return to SWPL action away to Queen's Park next Sunday.
