Celtic 1-2 Glasgow City - SWPL Summary

Celtic 1-2 Glasgow City - SWPL Summary

Brenna Lovera scored her 12th SWPL goal of the season and Kimberley Smit netted in the 86th minute as Glasgow City beat Celtic 2-1 to secure an important three points against Celtic at New Douglas Park.

An early free-kick was awarded to the hosts but they could not take an advantage of the opportunity on the edge of the box. And that proved to be the only chance for either side inside the first 20 minutes.

That was until the 23rd minute when Lovera unleashed a curling strike from the left flank, after being played through by Aleigh Gambone, which soared beyond Celtic goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty and into the back of the net for 1-0.

We fashioned an opportunity to make it two in the dying minutes of the first half when captain Hayley Lauder whipped in an inviting cross that was met by the head of Nicole Kozlova, but she saw her effort collected by Daugherty.

It was a fast start from City in the second half with Lovera whipping a cross into the box which was punched away by Daugherty before a certain header from Emily Whelan.

A great goal-line clearance from Kimberley Smit denied Celtic the equaliser on 55 minutes, with the Dutch defender putting her body on the line to clear the danger from Emma Lawton's low drive inside the area.

But the leveller did soon arrive just before the hour mark. Saoirse Noonan fired home from the centre of the box on the half volley to make it 1-1.

Celtic then looked to hit us on the counter following a corner with the ball finding its way to Lucy Ashworth-Clifford who saw her powerful strike pushed round the post by goalkeeper Lee Gibson.

Our goalkeeper was called into action again when she had to be alert to gather substitute Natalie Ross' effort moments after she came on the pitch for the home side.

With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Lovera had a chance to net her brace but before she could fire a strike towards goal, Celtic goalkeeper Daugherty made a well-timed interception to direct the ball away from the forward's feet.

And it would be Smit who netted the match-winner in the 86th minute when she bundled the ball home inside a busy box. A vital goal securing a vital three points.

City return to SWPL action following the international break with a home clash against Motherwell at Petershill Park on Sunday 13th April. You can buy your ticket here
