City end pre-season with comfortable win

Glasgow City 3

Sunderland 0

Glasgow City finished off their pre-season schedule with a strong 3-0 win against English Championship side Sunderland at Petershill Park.

It was a fairly calm first half hour with few chances. City did however dominate the play and looked most likely to create an opportunity.  The only real action came within four minutes for a challenge from Aoife Colvill and resulting altercation with the Sunderland defender ending in a yellow card for Colvill.

City then did find the moment after a foul in the box which lead to Colvill being barged off the ball in the box and Lauren Davidson stepped up from the spot.  Unlike the week previous where her penalty hit the post, Davidson made no mistake side footing past the goalkeeper’s left side and it was one-nil to City!

Chances started to ramp up for City but Sunderland had their best chance of the game too shortly after the opener. A long pass lead through to a one-on-one but Clachers narrowed the angle and the shot hit the post and City cleared. Things then did get better for City when Mairead Fulton scored a pre-season screamer!  Good play lead to Lauren Davidson centrally at the edge box to lay off for an on-coming Fulton to ping home, again past the goalkeeper’s left side.  City two clear at the break.

Changes for both teams meant that the game produced fewer chances. City fans managed to see Brenna Lovera for the first time, off the bench, and she was a lively figure.  Lauren Davidson had two further chances to add the scoring, including a free kick which cannoned off the crossbar.  Aleigh Gambone had a ferocious strike beaten round the near post too after some good skill.

City would wrap up with a third goal in the 89th minute when passing play lead to Davidson on the far side being the provider for second half sub Claire Walsh to slot home.

A great run out for City with Hibs just a week away now in the Scottish Power SWPL.
