City fall to a narrow defeat in Airdrie

By Freya Deyell

Glasgow City were left frustrated as a Chloe Craig penalty would prove to be the difference in a game that the visitors dominated for long spells but were unable to find the goal their efforts deserved.

Leanne Ross made one change from the side that defeated Montrose 7-0 last weekend with Lisa Forrest coming in to replace Wilma Forsblom as City started where they left off in Angus playing with tempo and pressing the Celtic defence.

Nicole Kozlova nearly had her side in front during the early stages but she was unable to get enough purchase on the ball and a combination of Daugherty and Hayes were able to scramble it clear.

City continued to dictate the tempo but shots from Katie Lockwood, Aleigh Gambone and Sam van Diemen were all dealt with before a flurry of late yellow cards ended the half as the two sides went in level at the break.

At the start of the second half Celtic Head Coach Elena Sadiku made a tweak bringing on Kerner for Barclais and that change saw the home side come more into the game although City would continue to create the better chances with Kozlova and Lisa Forrest both shooting wide after good wing play from the dangerous Sofia Määttä.

It would be Celtic though who would take the lead on the 52nd minute after Sam van Diemen was adjudged to have brought down Maria McAneny with Chloe Craig tucking the ball past Lee Gibson from the penalty spot.

As both sides rang the changes City continued to push and Kozlova nearly got the equaliser their play had earned but her header hit the bar before Kimberley Smit was denied from close range by Daugherty.

That pressure would continue until the very last kick of the game but City were to be denied and focus now turns to Wednesday night and the visit of Hearts to K Park.
