City secure Petershill Park derby victory

By Craig Edwards

Glasgow City bounced back from their Scottish Cup defeat last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle at Petershill Park.

Beatriz Prades Insa’s volley in first half stoppage time and Lauren Davidson’s close range strike secured the three points for City

Leanne Ross made four changes to the side that faced Celtic at the National Stadium with Sophia Martin handed her first ever start. Erin Clachers, Chloe Warrington and Linda Motlhalo were also brought into the starting eleven with Lee Gibson, Hayley Lauder, Emily Whelan and Anna Oscarsson all making way.

City, playing the role of the visitors to Petershill Park with Partick Thistle the home team in this Petershill Park derby, started brightly with Megan Cunningham’s gloves stung by Priscila Chinchilla.

Prades had a shot that was saved by Cunningham before Clachers was called into action to claim a high ball from a Partick free kick. Cara Henderson was next to have an effort on goal but her strike failed to trouble Clachers before Chinchilla fired a shot over the crossbar from a Kinga Kozak cross.

City were starting to put more and more pressure on the Partick backline but the players in red and yellow defended well with a Davidson shot blocked and a Clark header only finding the gloves of Cunningham.

The fourth official’s board had three minutes of additional time at the end of the first half and it was during stoppage time, that City made the breakthrough. Kozak and Davidson combined on the right wing with Davidson’s cross only half cleared by Claire Adams straight into the path of Prades who’s first time volley found the bottom right corner.

City started the second half well as they went in search for a second with Clark’s header being saved by Cunningham before they found the way through.

Martin’s cross found Motlhalo who’s shot was blocked on the line but Lauren Davidson was in the right place to slam the loose ball into the net for her 24th SWPL goal of the season.

Martin went close to getting City’s third when Davidson picked the pocket of the Partick Thistle defender but Martin couldn’t keep her shot down.

Cunningham was called into action late on to deny Lauder’s long range strike as City secured an important victory.

Glasgow City are back in action in midweek as we welcome Hibernian to Petershill Park.
