City suffer narrow defeat to Celtic

A last minute goal saw Glasgow City fall to a late 2-1 defeat at Celtic at the Excelsior Stadium this evening.

Strikes from Chloe Craig (70 pen) and Colette Cavanagh (89) were enough to cancel out Lauren Davidson leveller on 78 minutes.

Anna Oscarsson, Lee Gibson and Kinga Kozak were just three of many changes from Sunday's 11-1 cup win over St Johnstone at the weekend.

A tight opening period saw few changes for either side, with Lauren Davidson blasting just over after 20 minutes, while Amy Muir almost opened the scoring with a fine drive shortly after.

Linda Motlhalo's cross was almost deflected into the Celtic net just before the half hour mark by Caitlin Hayes as City continued to apply pressure.

Gibson was then forced into a magnificent save as Shen Menglu's shot almost crept in - Brenna Lovera would then make a magnificent block on the follow up.

It was Kenzie Weir's turn to go closest next when she almost nodded a lovely Mairead Fulton free kick beyond the 'keeper only for Kelly Clark to clear off the line.

Lovera would go close in the opening throws of the second period half but Clark would deflect the shot wide. Weir would then force Kelsey Daugherty into an outstanding save from the corner.

Davidson would then test Daugherty with a free kick from distance.

However, a Celtic break would the deadlock after Kenzie Weir was adjudged to have fouled a Celtic player in the area and received her marching orders before Chloe Craig tucked away the penalty.

Lovera would go close for City again shortly afterwards but her drive would just not dip enough.

Davidson would have City level for City moments later when her left foot drive took a wicked deflection and wrong footed the Celtic 'keeper.

It wouldn't be enough though as Colette Cavanagh would strike late to secure all three points for the home side.
