Codie Thomas: 'I Want To Be At The Very Top'

Codie Thomas has ambitions to be one of the best, and believes her loan spell at Glasgow City can help fulfil her potential.

The 19-year-old defender joined us on loan from Women's Super League side Manchester City, where she had made a total of four senior appearances since making her debut in the UEFA Champions League.

This may just be the beginning of what looks set to be a promising senior career, but the youngster has targets that she wants to hit.

"I want to be the best player I can be." she replies when we ask where her ceiling is. "I want to be at the very top. I want to be the next Lucy Bronze and push to that level."

Codie made her first appearance in orange in last weekend's Scottish Cup win over Stenhousemuir, and is striving for more minutes - starting with this weekend's league trip to Motherwell - as she continues to flourish.

"I want to get minutes, get senior experience, get better tactically, and develop on and off the pitch," Codie says.

“At Man City, I’m so grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given, but I needed that next step in my career, and the next step was playing senior minutes and getting consistent minutes to develop my game all around."

The Petershill crowd got to see what Codie can offer the team during her first 90 minutes at the club, and contributing to the squad is something she feels equipped to do.

"I’m a very aggressive player," the full-back says. "I love defending one-v-ones – it is one of my best attributes.

I’m quite a fast player. I like to go on the overlap and underlap, support the play, and get in the box to, hopefully, score some goals and get assists.

I think that fits the role to what the full-backs are needed for here. They are very much in the press. I’m able to get high and be aggressive, which I think suits quite me well.”

Codie's transition to her parent club to being here on loan in Scotland has been helped, she says, by both clubs operating with similar mindsets - to win.

"It’s incredible," Codie tells us when we ask what it's like to develop in a high-pressure environment. "Where else would you want to be? You want to be in a team that’s winning and pushing each other on.

“It is such a high standard, and you have to be ready to step into the shoes and fill the role that you are asked to do.

"The environment at Man City is very similar to Glasgow City - it's amazing. It’s so competitive and every session is difficult.

“I think because it is so intense down in Manchester and I’ve come here, where it is also really intense, it feels like it has helped me make that step. Both clubs want to be the best, and it shows."

Both teams currently sit top of their respective leagues, and do so because they have squads and coaches who demand high standards day in day out.

And learning from those around her is something Codie seeks to do wherever she is playing her football.

"The gaffer has been brilliant with me. She explains what she expects of me, and is helping me learn and adapt. Making my debut was a really special moment which I hope to push on from," she says.

“There are a lot of senior players here at Glasgow City, who have a lot of different experience.

“It is a really nice environment, and I feel comfortable enough to go up to the girls and ask them questions. Some of them already been helping me on and off the pitch, so that has been really nice.”

It has been an education off the pitch, too, with this being the first time Codie has moved away from home. She knows taking that step can prove to be just as important as what she gains from the football environment.

“Off the pitch, a big step for me was coming out of my comfort zone and leaving Manchester and moving away," the young defender says.

I have been at Man City for 10 years now, so stepping away from that and putting myself in a new environment will develop me and help me grow as a person.

“I have even learned how to cook and parallel park!”
