Early goal earns City three points in Glasgow derby

Glasgow City tasted victory in the Glasgow derby at the first attempt in 2024 as they saw off Celtic 1-0 at Petershill Park in SWPL1.

Fiona Brown scored what turned out to be the only goal of the match as she got the home side off to a flying start – her first goal after returning to City over the winter.

Leanne Ross made two changes from the side that defeated Spartans 5-1 at Ainslie Park. Brown and Chloe Warrington replaced Amy Muir and Lisa Forrest in the starting XI.

City made a blistering start as Brown’s cross looped up and over Kelsey Daugherty in the Celtic to nestle neatly in the net after just 15 seconds.

It was an evenly contested match between last season’s top two teams but City were coming out on top in all the individual battles. Brown was a constant thorn in Celtic’s side while Emily Whelan hounded and harassed the Celtic backline.

They had the chance to make it two from a freekick which found Kenzie Weir in the box but her header was well saved by Daugherty.

At the other end, Celtic’s only real chance of the match saw Natasha Flint’s header from a corner well held by Lee Gibson.

Weir had another chance to extend City’s lead but her header from a corner was headed off the line by Chloe Craig.

In the second half, defences were on top and chances were few and far to come by.

Lauren Davidson’s 30-yard freekick was driven low towards goal and was unconvincingly turned behind for a corner by Daugherty.

Celtic’s best chance of the second half came from a freekick wide on the right but the goal-bound effort was headed clear by Davidson.

With time running out, Linda Motlhalo had the chance to wrap things up but her strike from just inside the box curled wide.
