First half double secures City victory in the capital

Hearts 0

Glasgow City 2
Brown 9’ Whelan 38’

Two first half goals secured Glasgow City three points in the first game of the split.

A Fiona Brown curled finish and an Emily Whelan strike moved the Champions to within a point of the top of the table.

City started brightly in the capital with a Hayley Lauder cross almost diverted into the Hearts net by a home side defender.

The visitors bright start was rewarded on the 9th minute. A quick free kick from Lauder sent Fiona Brown down the left wing. The Scotland international cut back before curling the ball with her right foot over Charlotte Parker-Smith in the Hearts goal.

City looked for a second with Anna Oscarsson clipping the post after she was found at the back post by a Brown cross before Brown was involved again when her strike from distance was deflected off Emily Whelan, wrong footing the Hearts goalkeeper but Parker-Smith managed to adjust her feet quick enough to make the save and deny Whelan’s rebound.

Whelan wouldn’t be denied shortly before half time though. A long ball forward from Kenzie Weir found Whelan, who’s first shot was saved but followed up and put the ball high into the roof of the net at the second attempt.

That second goal was important for City as Hearts had threatened with a Georgia Timms header forcing a save from Lee Gibson.

City went searching for a third at the start of the second half with Lauren Davidson having a strike that went straight at Parker-Smith while the home side tried to respond with Timms again having an effort, but this time failed to trouble Gibson.

The visitors went the closest to scoring in the second half when in the final minutes, a corner kick caused a stramash in the Hearts six yard box but the home side managed to scramble the ball clear.

City are next in action when we welcome Celtic to Petershill Park at the end of the month.
