Glasgow City 2-0 Hearts - SWPL Summary

Glasgow City signed off from the Scottish Women's Premier League with an impressive 2-0 win over Hearts at Petershill Park which secured second place in the league and with it a place in next term's UEFA Champions League.

A Kimberley Smit header after 15 minutes gave a dominant City the lead, before Nicole Kozlova made it 2-0 inside the first minute of the second half. It proved to be a comfortable performance as we rounded off our league campaign at the Peasy.

It was also a special afternoon as forward Fiona Brown - who will retire at the end of the 2024/25 season - made her return to the pitch 399 days after she sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury, coming on as a late substitute.

A good opportunity arrived in the opening five minutes when Brenna Lover had done all the hard work, but could not get her shot away cleanly inside the box before Sofia Määttä headed over from a rebounded effort.

Soon after, there was a stramash in the box after a ball sent in by Määttä, and it resulted in City hitting the post, which looked like it came from a Kozlova close-range shot.

Our lead arrived in the 15th minute when Smit powerfully headed home after connecting with a corner sent in from the right by today's captain Hayley Lauder.

The visitors looked to respond with shots from distance, but Sade Adamolekun's effort was comfortably gathered by Lee Gibson, before Lisa Robertson's strike soared well wide of the target.

We fashioned a great chance to make it 2-0 as the end of the first half approached, with another inviting ball being sent in by Määttä, after some nice play from Aleigh Gambone and Kozlova to work the ball down the left flank, but it was too high for an awaiting Lovera inside the area.

It was a fast start to the second half as we doubled our advantage almost straight from kick-off. Hearts post possession, allowing Natalia Wróbel to play through Kozlova, who finished the move off with a left-footed strike.

It could have been 3-0 just before the hour mark when the ball dropped to Gambone on the edge of the box, but her well-hit strike was gathered by an alert Charlotte Parker-Smith in the Hearts goal.

Kozlova was gifted an opportunity to bag her brace, again capitalising on a mistake from Hearts, but this time our forward could only hit her strike into the side-netting.
