Every ten minutes a woman or girl is killed. This has to stop and we as a club have resolved to play our part.
The UNITE to End Violence against Women initiative is a multiyear effort to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world.
The initiative, launched in 2008 under the leadership of the UN Secretary-General, was created to support the civil society led 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign around the world which this year runs from Monday 25th November - Tuesday December 10th.
Managed by UN Women, UNITE calls on governments, civil society, women’s organisations, young people, the private sector, media, and the UN system to join forces to address the global pandemic of violence against women and girls.
At this Sunday's Scottish Cup tie against Partick Thistle we will be joining the Orange the World campaign and ask supporters to join us in wearing orange, not just the colour of our club, but also a vibrant symbol of what a world free of gender based violence can be.
As part of our action, players will complete pre-match warm ups wearing orange t-shirts highlighting statistics relating to gender based violence. These will later be signed and available to purchase on our website.
All profits from the sale of these t-shirts will be donated to local charity Glasgow Women's Aid and you can find out more about their work here https://glasgowwomensaid.org.uk/.
Players will also wear orange wrist tape during the match and there will be a new board added to the Petershill Park surrounds for home matchdays with it's first appearance set for our home game against Rangers next Sunday (December 15th).
All profits from matchday shop sales during that match will also be donated to Glasgow Women's Aid.
CEO Laura Montgomery on the importance of the campaign.
''As a club that has put the success and safety of women at the forefront of everything we have done since our foundation in 1998, it is vital that we use our platform to highlight the continued danger that women can still face every single day.
We hope by using our platform it will encourage others to do the same as we all strive for a more fair and equal world for everyone.''
