City suffer first league defeat at Hoops take victory

Glasgow City would suffer their first league defeat of the season as Celtic won 4-2 at Petershill Park on Sunday afternoon.

Second half goals from Priscila Chinchilla and Hayley Lauder would not be enough for the hosts as Natalie Ross (15), Natasha Flint (32, 63) and Caitlin Hayes (55) struck for Celtic.

Head coach Leanne Ross was able to welcome back captain Hayley Lauder as she replaced Linda Motlhalo in City's only change from the win over Hearts a fortnight ago.

Anna Oscarsson 30-yard drive set out the home side's intentions immediately as she tested Pamela Tajonar from distance.

City would go close again 12 minutes in when Chinchilla capitalised on a mistake from Caitlin Hayes to burst into the box and, while he cross was blocked, Kinga Kozak's half volley drew a fantastic reaction save from Tajonar.

Against the run of play though, Celtic would take the lead after 15 minutes when a ball over the top set Jacynta free in the area and her cross would find Ross to fire past Gibson.

The response from the home side was positive though and they almost drew level immediately afterwards when Kozak broke free to feed Lauren Davidson to shoot from distance - but Tajonar would be equal to it.

However, as City pushed forward, Celtic would grab their second as a long ball would find Flint who lobbed into the net to double the Hoops advantage.

A burst from Chinchilla just before half time would almost half the deficit when her drive and run agonisingly hit the post and Kozak would stretch enough to fire home the rebound.

Great work from Emily Whelan shortly after the half time break would set Davidson clean through on goal but the onrushing goalkeeper would do enough to divert it wide.

And Glasgow City would get their deserved goal back in 52nd minute when more good work from Whelan set Davidson away again and she crossed perfectly for Chincilla to blast home from five yards out.

From the kick off though, the Hoops would be awarded a penalty when Chinchilla fouled in box but Chloe Craig's penalty would be saved brilliant by Gibson to keep the difference to just the one goal.

Just a minute later though Hayes would head home from close range to restore the two goal lead - Flint would add a fourth when she blasted home from close range.

Neat play between Chinchilla and Davidson would then see City grab a goal back when the latter cross for Lauder to score as she looped the ball into an empty net.

City when then see Claire Walsh cannoned a header off the bar as the league leaders pushed to find a way back into the match.

Celtic would be handed a chance to kill the game with just over 10 minutes to play when the referee handed the away side a penalty - much to the surprise of the watching crowd - but Gibson would pull off another fantastic save to deny Flint her hat trick.

Sadly for City though it was a match that just wasn't to be.
