On Tuesday night, fans of women’s football and film fanatics alike joined us alongside event hosts The Sideline Podcast at The Social Hub in Glasgow’s Merchant City, for a celebration of the Glasgow City story.
As, five years after its completion the RTS Scotland Award Winning BBC Alba documentary, The Women Who Built Glasgow City, had its long-awaited public premiere.
The film, which was produced by Purple TV, focuses on our founders Carol-Anne Stewart and Laura Montgomery. It details the highs, the lows and everything in between since the formidable pair founded Glasgow City in 1998.
It was a special night with people turning out to watch the film which showcases who Glasgow City are, what the club have achieved and overcome, and the impact the club has had on the wider Scottish game, with Cas and Laura at the centre of it all.
Following the documentary screening, Laura, Cas and the film’s director Margot McCuaig joined The Sideline’s hosts Amanda and Megan for a live podcast recording before taking questions from the audience.
An engaging conversation saw the trio reminiscence about the makings of the documentary, how filming it proved to be an important period of reflection during a difficult time for both Laura and Cas, and how the club and the women’s game has grown since the film’s original airing on the BBC in 2020.
And when asked what drove them to set up a club like City – who had giving girls and women the opportunity to play football at its forefront from the very beginning – Cas described it up perfectly.
“When you ask about what drove us, I truly can’t put my finger on it,” she pondered. “It was just down to a feeling of unfairness and wanting to right a wrong.”
Right a wrong they certainly did. With countless girls and women from Scotland beyond having had the opportunity to play and succeed in the beautiful game thanks to the dedication of both Cas and Laura.
The pair have already established a legacy which will only continue to cement itself, with the club showing no signs of letting up. The drive and ambition as strong as it was 27 years ago.
“They sure did blaze a trail and continue to do so,” Margot said, summing up our founders’ impact in only a few but very meaningful words.
Experience the Glasgow City story for yourself as we return to Petershill Park on Sunday 13th April to face Motherwell in Scottish Women's Premier League action.
