Interview: Still Chasing Success - Lee Gibson On Her Aim To Keep Delivering

Interview: Still Chasing Success - Lee Gibson On Her Aim To Keep Delivering

Lee Gibson has enjoyed many memorable moments during her time with Glasgow City – and is raring for even more after she signed a one-year contract extension.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has extended her stay with the club until the summer of 2026. She has enjoyed a decorated career with City to date, lifting 20 trophies. Ten of those are Scottish Women’s Premier League titles, six are Scottish Cups, and four are League Cups.

Gibson has played on club football's biggest stage with City and excelled. She played a key part in helping us reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019, saving three penalties in the shootout against Brondby, and is one appearance away from playing 50 games in the European competition.

Away from club football, she has been capped by Scotland 61 times and represented her country at the 2019 FIFA World Cup, playing in all three matches, and was included in the squad for the 2017 European Championships.

This season has been an especially enjoyable one for Gibson. With City gunning for another SWPL title and a Scottish Cup triumph, the goalkeeper’s appetite for silverware is as strong as ever.

“I’ve really enjoyed my football here over the years,” Gibson says. “Especially this season, I’ve loved the game time that I've had and being more consistent in my performances has been huge for me.

I’m hungry to keep performing at the highest level for as long as I can. I feel like I’m in a good position now to do that and to give back to the club.

“Over the next year, I want to maintain that consistency and put in big performances when they are needed and required.

We’ve had such a good defensive record this year, and it is something we take a lot of pride in. Being at the back, you must make big saves in the big moments. I relish that. That’s what you want to be able to do and showcase what you can do.

“But it always comes down to success. When you look back at your career, you look at what you’ve won. I want to win even more with this club.

“Arriving here when I was 18 to now, it is the same expectation and the same pressure to go and win. That’s what I love to do. I love to play with that pressure and represent this club.”

Before all of those successes and experiences gained on some of football’s biggest stages, a teenage Lee started her senior career at Hamilton Accies, wearing number 29. It was a formative experience for the young goalkeeper and one that sticks with her to this day.

That connection is why she continues to wear the same number for Glasgow City. A goalkeeper may want to claim the No.1 shirt as their own, but for Gibson, 29 feels much more fitting.

It was one of my first senior numbers when I was a teenager at Accies,” Gibson explains. “From then on, it was always the number I wanted.

I’ve been at the club and played as the number one – I think I’ve had three or four different numbers during my time here – but 29 has just stuck.

“When I came back, they asked if I wanted to be the number one. I said I wanted 29. It’s got that sentimental feeling to it because that’s the number I started with when I started playing senior football.”

Many of Gibson’s proudest moments have arrived with her wearing number 29 on her back. There will, hopefully, be many more to come.

“It can be hard to reflect when you’re still in the moment and you still want to have as much success and enjoyment playing football as you possibly can,” Gibson says. “But, looking back, did I think I'd be where I am now? Probably not.

“It would have been a dream to play for Glasgow City for as long as I have, to play for the national team, and to go to major tournaments with Scotland

It’s crazy when you look back at the things you’ve been able to do and achieve at the club, both domestically and on the European front in the Champions League. I wouldn’t change a minute of it.”

Gibson has already achieved so much with Glasgow City, but her journey is far from over. As she embarks on the next chapter of her career, her legacy will no doubt continue to grow.
