Late goal not enough for City at the Peasy

Glasgow City 1
Giammona 90
Celtic 2
Hayes 38' Flint 55

A late goal from Carlee Giammona was not enough to stop Celtic from claiming a 2-1 victory over Glasgow City at Petershill Park.

Goals either side of half time from Caitlin Hayes (38) and Natasha Flint (56) was enough to see the away side victorious despite Giammona's late strike (90).

Head Coach Leanne Ross kept the same starting 11 that had secured victory away at Hearts in the opening game of the split as City looked for a 12th consecutive SWPL victory.

Both sides had a fair share of chances in the opening exchanges although neither side tested either of the goalkeepers too hard.

The first goal of the game came after 38 minutes, when a corner swung in from the right found Caitlin Hayes who headed Celtic in front.

The second for the visitors came early in the second half as a long ball forward allowed Natasha Flint to score.

City looked for a way back into the game as the clock ticked towards 90 but Emily Whelan's shot was blocked while a Hayley Lauder free kick went over the crossbar.

As the clock reached the 90 minute mark, a free kick just inside the Celtic half was delivered into the penalty box by Charlotte Wardlaw with Carlee Giammona getting on the end of it as she volleyed the ball into the back of the net.

That goal gave the home side a lift going into stoppage time but the closest City got to an equaliser was a strike from the edge of the box from Giammona that went over the crossbar as Celtic held on.
