Leanne Ross Previews Europa Cup Visit to HB Køge

No matter the result on Wednesday night, Head Coach Leanne Ross knows it is only half-time in our UEFA Women's Europa Cup Second Qualifying Round clash with Danish side HB Køge, but has urged her City side to ensure we return to Glasgow with a positive result ahead of next week's home leg.

The squad are in Køge for tonight's first leg, with a place in the Round of 16 the prize for the winner over the two legs.

Leanne said: "It's something we have to focus on, the tie can't be won or lost in that first game.

"We go away from home, put on a good solid defensive performance and make sure we've got something to play for when we come back here next week."

To claim a good result, Leanne knows her squad will have to be in good form, as she discussed the threat she is expecting from the Danes, who currently sit top of the A-Liga with seven wins and one loss thus far.

She added: "We both like to play attacking football, but if it becomes a game of basketball and it's just transitional, I don't know which team it suits best.

"It's going to be a really tough game. I've watched five or six of their league games. They are sitting top of the league. They are very attacking-minded, very good in transitions, and they have got a lot of key players who we've identified, so they are a threat from all over the pitch.

"We're going to need to be really defensively solid, and then make the most of the opportunities that we can create."

This may be the first time we have faced Køge, but City have a good track record against Danish opposition on the European stage, with our last trip to the Nordic country being our 2-0 win over Brøndby in the Round of 16 in the Champions League in 2019.

We would go on to win the tie via a penalty shootout in the return leg at Petershill Park, reaching the quarter-finals of the competition for the second time in our history.

It is a contest Leanne has good memories of and she hopes the current City squad can deliver another European memory against the Danes to our fans.

Our Head Coach said: "We were speaking about that with Hayley and Lee and recalling a few memories from that game.

"I remember having to fly back straight after the game because I was working the next day and couldn't get the day off, so we had to leave straight after the game and fly back in two groups.

"In terms of experience, it's great to be able to call on that within the squad.

"It was a good game, a tough game, and then an even tougher return leg when they came back over here.

"I hope it's not as nail-biting as that game at the Peasy! It went right down to the wire.

"But we owe it to the fans to make sure we've got something to fight for when we play the home leg next week. We want to make it a good, entertaining game for them, and we'll do everything we can to make sure that becomes a reality.

"Hopefully, everyone will come out and support us next week."
