Linda Motlhalo: Reaching WAFCON Final Would Be Statement Of Hard Work

With a place in the final at stake, Glasgow City’s Linda Motlhalo and her South African teammates are ready to showcase the hard work that has brought them this far at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Reigning WAFCON champions Banyana Banyana take on Nigeria, who are the highest ranked team left in the tournament, this evening in Casablanca.

A victory would guarantee Motlhalo's country the chance to play to retain their title in the final, but she knows that the last four clash will be anything but easy.

South Africa started their WAFCON campaign in the group stages with a 2-0 win over Ghana - with Motlhalo scoring the opener from the penalty spot, before a 1-1 draw with Tanzania. They concluded the groups with an impressive 4-0 win against Mali.

Up next in the quarter-finals was a clash with Senegal who proved to be a stern test. After 120 goalless minutes, a place in the last four was decided with a penalty shootout.

Banyana Banyana held their resolve and converted four penalties compared to Senegal's one. A place in the semi-finals secured and one game away from the chance to defend their WAFCON crown.

Ahead of tonight's semi-final against Nigeria, we spoke to Motlhalo who told us what it would mean to reach Saturday's showpiece in Rabat.

"Reaching the final, for me, would be a statement of hard work that we have been putting in for months before the tournament," she said. "It would show how far we've come as a team.

"The biggest thing for us is team work - working for each other. Once we play, one can tell that we're one team and we have one goal which is to reach the final and retaining the title.

"We want to show people if you can win it once, you can win it twice. Everything is possible as long as we put in the work."

The City forward has played a pivotal role in Banyana Banyana's tournament, starting each of their four matches thus far.

The campaign, she says, has allowed her to work on different aspects of her game whilst still playing to her strengths to help her team.

"The tournament for me has gone the way I wanted," Motlhalo said. "I've been working more on my off-the-ball work rate and it has improved so much.

"I know I'm good on the ball, so I wanted to improve in other aspects of my football. On a personal note, it has been going how I wanted it to go.

"The tournament [as a team] has been both exciting and challenging at the same time. We've been winning games, but the teams haven't been making it easy for us. Overall, it has been a very fruitful tournament."

Good luck, Linda! We're all rooting for you!
