Match Summary: Glasgow City 3-1 Sheffield United

Match Summary: Glasgow City 3-1 Sheffield United

We concluded our pre-season schedule with a 3-1 win against Women's Super League 2 side Sheffield United. City came from 1-0 down to claim the victory in a good contest, with our goals coming from Lisa Forrest, Lana Golob, and Natalia Wróbel.

Ahead of next Sunday's Scottish Women's Premier League opening match against Motherwell at Petershill Park, our final friendly saw us travel to neutral venue Durham to face the Blades.

Lee Gibson was the first goalkeeper called into action during the early stages, being alert and getting down low to deny the forward's strike from just inside the area.

The first goal went to the English side after 15 minutes when an effort from the edge of the box was guided into the back of the net following a well-worked move by our opposition.

We looked to respond almost immediately from the restart with Emily Whelan doing incredibly well down the right flank to win a corner. The resulting set-piece was met by the head of Golob, but was gathered on the line by the Blades goalkeeper.

At the other end, a fine double save by Gibson ensured Sheffield United led only by one. She pushed a shot onto the bar, before being brave and making herself big to thwart the rebound with her chest.

It remained a fairly even contest even after we went behind, with our next best opportunity falling to Wróbel who directed a strike just over the top of the crossbar.

We pulled ourselves level near the end of the first half and it came from some great play. A superb long ball forward from Golob found Whelan down the right wing, and she played it across the face of goal to Lisa Forrest who slotted it home to make it 1-1.

It was a positive start to the second half by City as half-time substitute Katie Lockwood picked out Nicole Kozlova in the box, but the forward could not get a clean shot away due to pressure from the opposing defenders.

And we soon took the lead when Wróbel's angled shot came back off the woodwork and an unmarked Golob at the back post headed it into the back for 2-1.

We won back the ball straight from kick off and went on to find our third. Newly-appointed player-assistant coach Hayley Lauder powered through the midfield, before laying off Wróbel. Our No.10 fired the ball towards goal, with it coming off the inside of the post before rolling over the line.

It should have been four before the hour mark, with smart feet from Whelan in the box allowing her to keep possession and then picking out Smit, however, the latter's driving shot was blocked by a defender.

Despite there being no more goals, it was an improved second-half display from City both in all areas of the pitch as we claimed a win in a challenging contest against solid English opposition.
