Glasgow City can confirm that long-serving defender Megan Foley will retire from football at the end of the 2024/25 season.
The 31-year-old, who joined City from Rangers in 2016, has decided to call time on an illustrious career which has seen her win five Scottish Women’s Premier League titles and a Scottish Cup to date.
During her time at the club, Foley has continuously demonstrated her versatility on the pitch by playing in whatever position she was required. As such, she has racked up more than 200 City appearances, scored 19 goals and sits 10th amongst our all-time appearance makers.
Upon announcing her retirement, Foley said: “At this point, it is probably a good opportunity for me to step away.
“Now is the time to move on to the next adventure and I’m lucky I’ve got the opportunity to step into a full-time job.”
She continued: “I want to thank everyone at the club for giving me the opportunity to even come here in the first place.
“When I walked into the club all these years ago, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get game time, but I proved myself wrong and probably a few others out there wrong.
“To be able to play with some amazing players – there are too many to name, to come up against so many good players, to win titles and to play in the Champions League, it has been absolutely amazing.
“I’ve got so many memories and to have them playing this sport that we all love... It’s just been a great opportunity.”
Chief executive Laura Montgomery added: “I speak with great pride having had the privilege of having Megan Foley at our club for these past eight and a half years.
In modern football, very few players show the loyalty and commitment to one club, which Megan has shown to Glasgow City and it is testament to her that she sits in our leaderboard for all time appearances and retires as a true club legend.
One of the finest people we have ever had at City and one of the best team mates year after year in the dressing room.
Goalkeeper is possibly the only position Megan has never been asked to play in the team, which highlights how important she has been to us and our success over all of these years. Thank you Megan for everything you have given Glasgow City, it has been an absolute honour to have you in our colours.''
Foley made her competitive debut for Glasgow City against Jeanfield Swifts in early 2017, before scoring her first goal against her former club Rangers soon after.
Her first campaign ended with City being crowned the SWPL champions and it was a sign of what was to come for Foley as she would go on to win three more consecutive titles.
She would become a league champion once again in 2022/23, helping City win a 16th SWPL title in dramatic fashion when we defeated Rangers at Ibrox on the final day of the campaign.
Scottish Cup glory also arrived in 2019, with Foley scoring once on our way to the final where we defeated Hibernian at Tynecastle to win the competition for the ninth time.
On the European stage, Foley represented the club on many occasions in the UEFA Champions League and was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals back in 2019.
Foley will remain a part of the playing squad for our final SWPL match against Hearts at Petershill Park and our Scottish Cup final match against Rangers.
Everyone at City would like to thank Mego for being an exemplary representative of our club over the last nine years, and we can’t wait to see what she does next.
Once City, Always City.
