Motherwell 0-1 Glasgow City - Match Summary

Motherwell 0-1 Glasgow City - Match Summary

Emily Whelan's first goal of the season was enough to secure three points as Glasgow City continued their winning run against a well-organised and tenacious Motherwell at K Park.

Goalkeeper Lee Gibson returned to the starting line up to lead the side, as did Wilma Forsblom, last week's hat-trick scorer Nicole Kozlova and Whelan, but it would be the Scotland international that would be key in keeping the scores level in the opening stages.

First denying Rangers loanee Laura Berry and then Bailey Collins as City struggled to take control of the game against a hard pressing home side.

The breakthrough would come with twenty-five minutes on the clock as Whelan picked up the ball on the left-hand side before driving towards goal and beating Rebecca Cameron at her near post.

Whelan would continue to look most likely to double City's lead but the second half would continue in the same vein as the first with few chances as both sides scrapped for dominance.

Former City Academy graduate Sarah Gibb was a sweet connection away from finding an equaliser for the home side whilst Kimberley Smit would be a threat from set-pieces for City although she was unable to steer her headers on target.

As it was, Whelan's goal would prove to be enough as attention now turns towards our return to Petershill Park next Sunday and the visit of Hibernian as the SWPL season continues.
