Sky Sports Cup Final Match Summary: Glasgow City 2-1 Rangers

Glasgow City are Sky Sports Cup champions!

A quickfire Lisa Forrest brace in the second half saw us take a 2-0 lead at Fir Park, before Katie Wilkinson halved the deficit in the dying minutes. But a tremendous effort from the entire squad ensured we got our hands on this trophy for a joint-record seventh time in our history.

Match Action from Fir Park

The best chance of the opening stages fell to the visitors, with forward Katie Wilkinson heading the ball down, connecting with it from a corner, but she was denied by a great reaction stop by goalkeeper Lee Gibson.

A great run and cut back at the byline by Sofia Määttä down the right flank won us a corner, with the resulting set-piece eventually allowing Natalia Wróbel to get a shot away, however, it was straight at Rangers goalkeeper Jenna Fife.

Rangers hit the bar in the 30th minute, through a deflected Shin-Ji Kim effort, before we hit them on the counter-attack but Forrest's final touch was too heavy and the ball ran out for a goal kick.

Hayley Lauder registered our best effort of the game so far as we approach half-time, with her powerful driving shot tipped just inches wide of the far post by Fife's fingertips.

In the dying minutes of the first half, after winning possession in the midfield, we hit Rangers down the right with Lisa Evans then finding an unmarked Emily Whelan, who struck her shot wide.

We started with intent in the second half, with Määttä and Forrest both fashioning good opportunities, but could not convert them into the opener.

At the other end, Wilkinson only had to tap the ball home from a couple yards out, but a superb goal-line clearance from centre-back Kimberley Smit ensured it remained goalless.

Just after the hour mark, Wróbel burst up the left before cutting inside to get a shot away, which Fife had to push away. Linda Motlhalo looked to bury the rebound, but her strike was sent behind for a corner.

It was becoming end-to-end stuff as Rangers' Mia McAulay was next to have ago, watching her shot trail wide of Gibson's post.

We continued to apply pressure, and Wróbel hit a long-range effort midway through the second half, but her shot from outside the box didn't trouble the opposition, landing just wide of the target.

A quickfire double from Forrest had us 2-0 up by the 72nd minute, with her first goal being a tap in from a couple yards out following a corner, before a stunning strike from 20 yards out secured her brace.

In horrendous conditions, Wilkinson scored from outside the area in the final minutes of the contest, to get a goal back for her side, but it proved to be just a consolation effort as we deservedly lifted the trophy.
