Sky Sports Cup Preview: Hamilton Accies 0-5 Glasgow City

We progressed to the quarter-finals of this season's Sky Sports Cup after a 5-0 win against fellow top-flight opposition Hamilton Academical at New Douglas Park.

Having dominated the first half and having had a goal ruled out, City deservedly took the lead on the stroke of half-time through Lisa Forrest's third goal of the season.

A quickfire double from half-time substitute Sofia Määttä, with her goals arriving in the 52nd and 54th minute respectively, and late goals from Mebae Tanaka and Nicole Kozlova put us 5-0 up, and secured safe passage to the quarter-finals of the competition.

We will find out our opponents when the draw for the last eight of the Sky Sports Cup takes place live on Sky Sports News at 2.30pm on Tuesday 7th October.

Match action from New Douglas Park

For the cup clash, there were six changes made from Wednesday night's 1-1 draw with Hibernian in the league, with Erin Clachers, Emma Brownlie, Erín McLaughlin, Natalie Wróbel, Forrest, and Mebae Tanaka - who was making her first start for City - all coming into the XI.

A first shot on target arrived for City after 10 minutes when a delightful ball from the left flank from Tanaka found Katie Lockwood, whose downward header was gathered by Abigail Paton in the Accies goal.

We went so close after 16 minutes played when McLaughlin did well to keep possession in the middle of the park and play it down to Lockwood on the right. Our No.8 played it across the face of goal, finding Forrest, and her close-range effort went just wide of the post.

Lockwood was involved soon after when the ball dropped to her feet after it was flicked on the head of Forrest, but she fired her shot off target from inside the area.

We had the ball in the back of the net after 32 minutes by Forrest, and the referee awarded the goal, but after consulting with the linesman, it was eventually ruled out for an adjudged handball in the build-up.

But on the stroke of half-time, Forrest had the ball in the back of the net again and this one counted. She struck the rebound after Tanaka's initial strike, having connected with a Hayley Lauder cross, was saved by Paton.

A quickfire brace from Määttä saw us goal 3-0 up inside the first ten minutes of the second half, with her first arriving when she cut in and drove the ball home, before registering a similar finish from the second after receiving the ball from Tanaka.

Three goals to the good, City still sought more and our next best chance fell to McLaughlin when the ball was cut back to her on the edge of the area and she fired her strike from range just wide of the goal.

And that fourth goal did soon come, and it was a great finish from Tanaka. She hit the ball, sent in by Chloe Warrington, in on her first touch to bag her second goal for City this season.

There was still time for another and Kozlova scored goal number five in the 80th minute when she drilled home a great cut back cross by McLaughlin on the byline.

In the dying minutes, Hamilton looked to hit us on the counter and Clachers had to be alert to make her first real save of the game, as she got down well at her near post to make a diving stop.

We remain on cup duties, as next up for City is a trip to Denmark to face HB Køge in the first leg of our UEFA Europa Cup Second Qualifying Round clash on Wednesday night.

Our next matches at home see us host Partick Thistle in the SWPL, before the return visit of Køge in the European second leg. Get your tickets for both games at the Peasy on Fanbase now!
