Spectacles and Close Contests: Glasgow City’s Jo Love and Amy Muir on our rivalry with Hibernian

There have been memorable match-ups when Glasgow City have faced Hibernian over the years. Ahead of the two sides meeting, in what will be both side's 500th SWPL game, Jo Love and Amy Muir reflect on one of Scottish women’s football’s fiercest rivalries.

Since the SWPL was formed in 2002, City have faced Hibs 59 times. We have claimed 41 wins, 10 have ended in draws and there have been eight defeats.

For so long, the two clubs led the way both on and off the pitch. So often the rivalry extended beyond the points gained or lost, reflecting the impact and passion for our game.

And to meet when the sides sit first and second in the league table, separated only by City’s superior goal difference, feels like a fitting occasion to mark the 500-game milestone.

Love has encountered Hibs many times during her 14-year tenure at Glasgow City. There have been highs and lows in such battles, and the midfielder is expecting another challenge at the Peasy this weekend.

"They have certainly always given us a good game,'’ she said. "They have had the success they’ve had because they’ve always been so hard-working, and it’s always been a really tough game.

"They deserve to be up there. They have shown that this season that even after 500 games, they are all still lashing it out."

Muir has been on both sides of the encounter since making the move to City from the Edinburgh side in the summer of 2022.

When lining up wearing green and white against those in orange and black, she knew she had to try to take her game to another level.

"At the very start of my Hibs career - I joined halfway through the season, so from an outside perspective - I knew that was the top of the table clash," Muir explained

"That was the game everyone was watching, so I knew going into it that it was more of a pressure game and something I hadn’t experienced before.

"They were always tight games. I enjoyed being part of that. That was probably summed up by the Scottish Cup final that season, with it being so close."

And that showpiece event at Tynecastle in 2019 remains one of the standout encounters against Hibs for the long-serving Love. It was a contest, she says, that encapsulated the rivalry.

"The Scottish Cup final in 2019... it was some spectacle," she recalled. "We ended up winning 4-3.

"It was the last game of the season. We thought it was going to go to extra-time because it was three each up until the very end. Clare Shine scored right at the end to get us through.

"I was dreading extra time, but the goals just kept coming and going. We went ahead and then they went ahead.

"It was such a good game to be a part of. We would have been really disappointed if we had lost out on that one. We had a good night after!"

Against her former club, one of Muir’s most memorable matches has been a dominant league win at Meadowbank last term.

"Last season, maybe towards Christmas time, we won 3-1," Muir explained. "We had a really good performance on that day.

"It was enjoyable for me. It felt like a free-flowing performance, with a lot of rhythm. That is probably one I enjoyed as a whole – just the performance, how it felt, and how we controlled it."
