SPWPL Match Report: Hearts v Glasgow City

The hosts applied early pressure and tested the City backline within the opening minutes, with an effort from Monica Forsyth comfortably gathered by Erin Clachers.

Hearts were awarded a free-kick on 14 minutes and opted to go directly for goal, but the attempt sailed over the crossbar. City responded immediately, breaking forward with purpose as Lisa Evans found Erin McLaughlin inside the area. Erin was unable to get a clean connection as she slid in, before Kelly Brady collected possession and fired an effort towards goal that was safely held by Rachel Johnstone.

Unfortunately, Erin McLaughlin sustained an injury and was replaced by Yuuka Kurosaki.

The hosts continued to threaten from set pieces, creating danger from a corner kick as the ball bounced invitingly inside the box, but Ez successfully intercepted and cleared the danger.

The match quickly developed into an end-to-end encounter. Kelly tested Johnstone once more with a well-struck effort before Lisa Forrest tried her luck from distance, forcing the Hearts goalkeeper into action as the shot drifted over the bar.

Hearts eventually found the breakthrough in the 19th minute when Mariana Speckmaier finished to give the home side the lead.

Buoyed by their opener, the hosts looked to strike again immediately, but the defensive duo, Yana Kotyk and Jesi Rossman stood firm to clear the danger.

City responded positively, winning possession high up the pitch before Emily Whelan delivered a dangerous cross into the area. Yuuka met it first time, but her effort was intercepted by Johnstone.

Both sides continued to exchange attacks. Forsyth threatened again for Hearts, but Rossman closed down the opportunity well, forcing the strike wide of goal.

Hayley Lauder then whipped a cross into the box, with Brady picking up possession and seeing her effort blocked. Lisa reacted to the loose ball but was unable to direct her attempt on target. Moments later, Evans came close with a powerful strike from distance that skimmed the top of the crossbar.

In the closing moments of the half, Lisa Forrest rose highest to meet a cross with a header, but Johnstone was again equal to it, ensuring Hearts took their one-goal advantage into the break.

City began the second half with intent, but Hearts were quick to capitalise on a turnover in possession and doubled their lead in the 50th minute through Jardine.

Looking for a response, Linda drove into the penalty area and picked out Lisa, who took a touch before aiming for the bottom corner. Her effort drifted narrowly wide. 

On the hour mark, Emily Gray and Sofia Määttä were introduced in place of Hayley Lauder and Lisa Evans.

Possession continued to swing from end to end, with both sides struggling to find the decisive final touch. As the game entered its final 20 minutes, Tia Primmer and Abi Harrison were introduced for Emily Whelan and Lisa Forrest.
