Back on home soil for the opening day of the 2026/27 ScottishPower Women's Premier League campaign as we hosted Celtic. Lisa Forrest gave City an early start but the visitors responded with two first-half goals on an afternoon which also marked City debuts for summer signings Kelly Brady, Jesi Rossman and Ruby Seaby.
Match action
We started on the front foot, immediately turning Celtic's high press into attacking opportunity as Hayley Lauder surged forward. Celtic looked threatening in the early stages, but Lee Gibson was alert to comfortably deal with their first opening.
At the other end, Emily Gray delivered a dangerous cross into the area for Kelly Brady, but she couldn't find that finishing touch. The breakthrough arrived as Lisa Forrest slots the ball into the net in the 10th minute.
Moments later, Kelly nearly doubled the advantage, but her effort found the side netting. Celtic looked to respond, but Lee remained calm between the posts, denying several close calls and then Emily Whelan tested Adelaide Gay with a long-range effort.
Celtic found the equaliser in the 31st minute after a scramble in the box. Shortly after which, Celtic's Fi Morgan found the net to make it 2-1. City continued to push before the break, with Emily Gray and Lisa Forrest both having attempts.
There were no changes at the break and City emerged for the second half ready to go again as play between Lisa Evans and Emily Gray almost produced an equaliser. Gray battled her way into the box before laying the ball to Hayley Lauder, whose strike rattled the crossbar.
City continued to push on but remained sharp at the back and Jesi Rossman produced a crucial block to halt a Celtic attack. We continued searching for a leveller with Kelly Brady driving down the wing and delivering a dangerous cross that Lisa Forrest volleyed over the bar. Kelly later fashioned a one-on-one opportunity for herself, but her effort was gathered by Gay.
In the 71st minute, Glasgow City made a double substitution with Erin McLaughlin and Ruby Seaby in place of Emily Whelan and Hayley Lauder.
Further changes came in the 85th minute, with Abi Harrison and Sofia Määttä replacing Lisa Forrest and Lisa Evans. Abi immediately looked to make an impact, finding opportunities, while Erin McLaughlin's late effort took a slight touch off a Celtic defender.
Despite a physical and intense second-half display with several promising chances, City were unable to find the equaliser before the final whistle.
We look ahead to next week as we travel north to face Aberdeen in another ScottishPower Women's Premier League fixture.
