SPWPL Match Report: Montrose v Glasgow City

A blustery afternoon at Station Park set the stage for Glasgow City's latest SWPL encounter, as goals from Lisa Evans, Kelly Brady and Emily Whelan secured all three points. Despite a frustrating spell after the break, City showed their resilience to withstand the pressure and see out the victory.

Match Action

Glasgow City made a bright start, forcing an early turnover inside the opening minute as Kelly Brady chased down a loose ball in the box, though Lauren Perry was able to gather.

City continued to threaten, with Emily Gray and Yuuka Kurosaki combining well down the wing before Em delivered an inviting cross for Kelly, whose effort found the side netting. Moments later, Em was fouled just outside the area and Lisa Evans made Montrose pay, curling a superb free kick into the back of the net to open the scoring in the sixth minute.

We remained in control, with Yuuka and Linda Motlhalo both going close, the latter seeing a powerful strike clip the crossbar. Ruby Seaby also caused problems with some direct running as City looked to double our advantage.

That goal arrived in the 20th minute when Em drove forward and found Linda, whose low cross was turned home by Kelly from close range to double City's advantage.

Montrose attempted to find a way back into the game, but City's defence stood firm. At the other end, Lisa continued to threaten from set-pieces, while Kelly and Yuuka kept testing the hosts back line.

As the break approached, City maintained control of possession and continued to create chances, taking a deserved two-goal lead into half-time.

Montrose began the second half looking to reduce the deficit early on, but a dangerous corner was carried away by the wind before City quickly turned defence into attack. Linda drove forward from deep before finding Ruby on the wing. Ruby's cross picked out Kelly in the box, but the striker's effort drifted wide of the target.

The hosts found their breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Ashley Robertson finished from inside the area to pull a goal back for Montrose.

City responded with a change, introducing Lisa Forrest in place of Kelly. The substitute nearly made an immediate impact, driving forward before finding Ruby, whose effort flashed narrowly past the post.

Montrose enjoyed a spell of pressure, but City's defence stood firm. Ruby then showcased her pace and determination, winning possession deep inside her own half before surging up-field and beating several players, only to be denied by the final touch.

As the game became increasingly physical, possession swung between both sides. City refreshed the attack in the 70th minute with Tia Primmer and Emily Whelan replacing Amy Anderson and Ruby Seaby.

We soon regained control as Lisa Evans drove through midfield and found Emily Gray in the box, but her effort was comfortably gathered by the keeper. Moments later, Emily Whelan made her mark, cutting in from the wing and curling a superb strike into the back of the net in the 77th minute.

City continued to press for a fourth in the closing stages. Amy Muir went close before Emily Whelan almost grabbed her second of the afternoon, only to see her effort clip the woodwork.

The final whistle confirmed a deserved victory for Glasgow City, securing three important points at Station Park.
