SWPL Match Summary: Glasgow City 5-0 Montrose

SWPL Match Summary: Glasgow City 5-0 Montrose

City returned to Scottish Power Women's Premier League action after a fortnight in fine form as we defeated Montrose 5-0 at Petershill Park thanks to goals from Abi Harrison,  Lana Golob, Erín McLaughlin, Mebae Tanaka and Lisa Forrest.

It was an afternoon to remember for four of our goal-scorers - who all joined this summer, with it being a first goal at the Peasy for Harrison and maiden competitive efforts for trio Golob, McLaughlin and Tanaka.

Tanaka opened her account for the club only 30 minutes after entering the pitch for her City debut.

Our first chance fell in the seventh minute when Harrison flicked the ball onto Emily Whelan with her head, and the latter hit a strike on the half-volley which dropped just wide of goalkeeper Lauren Perry's post.

We soon fashioned another opportunity as Lisa Evans sent an inviting ball into the box from the right flank, but it was just too high for Harrison who couldn't reach it.

Against the run of play, Montrose looked to punish City for losing possession inside their own half, however, Jade McLaren's long-range effort was too high

Our lead arrived in the 19th minute and it was Harrison who found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Linda Motlhalo did well to pick out Sofia Määttä down the right flank, before the Finnish forward squared it across the face of goal to our No.9, who slotted it home beyond Perry.

We went close to another midway through the first half when a corner was whipped in and met by Whelan at the back post, but she guided her header just over the woodwork.

With less than 10 minutes left to go in the first half, Harrison almost added an assist to her goal-scoring efforts, as she picked out Lisa Evans who saw a powerful strike well saved by the Montrose shot-stopper.

Määttä should have been on the scoresheet in the dying stages when she was sent clear through on goal, but her touch took her too wide and her eventual shot was saved by the legs of Perry, before in a similar move, she saw another effort clawed away by the visiting goalkeeper.

We did extend our lead before the first half was up though, and it was Golob who got it as she headed home an Evans corner for a maiden competitive goal for City since signing in the summer.

It was 3-0 early on in the second half when Evans bagged a second assist from a corner as she sent in a delivery to the back post, finding McLaughlin who struck it into the back of the net from a few yards out.

After coming on from the bench, Katie Lockwood had an opportunity to score our fourth, but her strike from the right-side of the box fizzed just wide of the post.

There was still time for more at the Peasy in the dying minutes as debutant Tanaka got in on the goal-scoring action with a long-range shot which caught out goalkeeper Perry to make it 4-0.

Goal number five came from the penalty spot after a foul was awarded when Nicole Kozlova was brought down by Georgia Carter. Forrest stepped up from 12 yards out and made no mistake in burying it into the bottom left corner.
