SWPL Match Summary: Glasgow City 1-1 Rangers

SWPL Match Summary: Glasgow City 1-1 Rangers

We extended our unbeaten run in the ScottishPower Women's Premier League by claiming a 1-1 draw in our penultimate home match ahead of the league split against Rangers.

A Rangers own goal through Laura Rafferty sent us 1-0 up after 16 minutes, but a late equaliser saw the points shared at Petershill.

Match action from Petershill Park

There was just one change from last week's win against Partick Thistle, with winger Emily Whelan replacing Mebae Tanaka down the flank.

It was the visitors who had the first opportunity inside the opening five minutes when a loose pass back from Emma Brownlie gifted Calliste Brookshire a shot, but some brave goalkeeping from Lee Gibson saw the ball smothered at the feet of the the Rangers forward.

And right up the other end, we won a corner which was met by the head of Lisa Evans, who directed her effort into the hands of goalkeeper Jenna Fife.

After created chances from a free-kick, won by Amy Muir, and a corner, Rangers threatened on the counter, with Gibson making another good stop to deny Eilidh Austin.

But we would soon take the lead and it came when Whelan put a superb run down into the final third, before finding Lisa Forrest, whose pass across the face of goal was turned into the back of the net by Rangers defender Rafferty.

It was a hat-trick of stops for Gibson, as she made another great save to push Laura Berry's strike from inside the box over the bar.

In the dying minutes of the first half, Rangers had the ball in the back of the net through Berry, but her strike was called offside and it remained 1-0 to City at half-time.

After the break, our first effort fell to Natalia Wróbel, who saw her strike on the edge of the area drop just over the crossbar.

Rangers looked to threaten from a corner on the hour mark, but the ball was sent back into the box for the second phase and was met by an off-target bicycle kick from Berry.

Our best chance of the half fell to Wróbel soon after, with the ball being recycled back to her from a corner, and she hit a curling effort with the outside of her boot which was just inches wide of the post.

As she already had done on several occasions throughout the game, goalkeeper Gibson kept us ahead, making a fantastic reaction save by tipping another strike from Berry the wrong side of the post.

With just over 10 minutes to go, we fashioned a good chance through Nicole Kozlova who drove down the left, cutting it back in the box, with the ball eventually falling to Linda Motlhalo, but her strike was gathered by Fife.

The Rangers goalkeeper soon denied Kozlova when she once again carried the ball down the left before getting herself into the box and unleashing a powerful strike.

The visitors would then go up the other end and find the equaliser, with forward Calliste Brookshire beating Gibson with a curling strike from distance.
