The Route to Hampden: Our Scottish Cup Journey So Far

Hampden is Glasgow City’s destination on Saturday afternoon when we will be looking to book our place in this season’s Scottish Cup final.

It is Motherwell who stand between the Original Trailblazers and a chance to battle for a tenth Scottish Cup title and a first since 2019 next month.

You can get your ticket for our semi-final match against Motherwell at the national stadium here.

But, before we look forward to this weekend’s last four clash against the Women of Steel, let’s take a look back at our Scottish Cup journey so far this season.

It all started at Petershill Park in December in the third round against Partick Thistle. Not only was it our first match in the competition this campaign, but the first in the dugout for then new assistant Leanne Crichton.

And we made a somewhat perfect start. With only seven minutes on the clock, Lisa Evans latched onto a ball on the edge of the box and fired it into the back of the net.

The game would become level in the second half following a Cara Henderson penalty, but parity was short-lived. Emily Whelan restored our advantage in the 68th minute, and Natalia Wrobel would add a third 10 minutes later to wrap up proceedings and safe passage to the next round.

“We responded really well in terms of the plan that we wanted to play,” head coach Leanne Ross said back in December, reflecting on her side showing a reaction after Thistle’s equaliser.

We identified where the spaces are and exploited that. We deserved to win the game and go through to the next round.”

After navigating our passage to the fourth round, another stern test awaited us. Celtic came calling at the Peasy in a clash that tested our resilience.

The visitors would strike first through Lucy Ashworth-Clifford, but, like we did after Thistle’s equaliser, we showed our character. Within seven minutes, it was 1-1 after Brenna Lovera slotted home from the penalty spot.

We were put on the back foot again after an own goal from Claire Walsh gave Celtic a 2-1 advantage just after the half-hour mark.

It took only four minutes into the second period for City to find the leveller. Samantha van Diemen scored her first goal in the Scottish Cup, heading home a delivery from a Hayley Lauder corner. Game on again.

And in the 54th minute, we would take the lead for the first time in this match. Lovera bagged her brace with a composed finish, linking up well with half-time substitute Nicole Kozlova.

A place in the quarter-finals was secured thanks to the 3-2 victory on home turf and a win which left two-time goal scorer Lovera delighted.

“It was definitely a battle, and I enjoyed it actually,” the forward reflected after helping us book our place in the last eight. “We had a slow start but found our way back in it with the penalty.

“We came out firing in the second half, and I’m really proud of the performance that we put in.”

Victory over Celtic set up a trip to Oriam, where we faced a determined Hearts side in the quarter-finals.

It looked like we would be in for a comfortable afternoon after dominating possession in the opening stages, and we reaped our reward for a positive start when Kozlova netted the opener after 24 minutes on the cutback.

Despite continuing to dictate play, the game was level going into half-time after Bayley Hutchison scored for the home side just before the break.

And the forward would add another for Hearts in the 79th minute to give them a 2-1 lead. Head coach Ross made a triple change as we looked to find a much-needed equaliser, and it was one of those who did indeed level the game. Enter Lisa Forrest, who smashed home our second goal in the dying minutes.

Hearts would be reduced to 10 players in injury time of the 90 minutes. City seized their opportunity with a player advantage, finding the all-important winner eight minutes into extra time.

Kimberley Smit was our match-winner when she connected with a dangerous cross sent into the box by Mairead Fulton. And breathe - 3-2, and our place at Hampden was secured.

“I was told just to come on, make an impact, be confident, make runs on the ball and just enjoy it,” goal scorer Forrest said at full-time in Edinburgh. Make an impact she certainly did.

Three rounds, three battles and countless moments of determination... all roads have led to Hampden. We will need your support to get us over the line once more - get your ticket for Saturday’s semi-final here.
