This Is What It Means to be City: Xiyu's Story

What Glasgow City means to each of our supporters is personal and unique.

As part of a new series we celebrate what it means to be City for members of our support. The believers in what an independent women's football club can achieve.

In the first edition Xiyu, a Chinese student who arrived to study and found a new home at Petershill Park, pens a letter to club co-founder Laura Montgomery as she prepares to leave Glasgow.

''I hope this letter finds you well. As a devoted supporter of Glasgow City, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude and admiration, before leaving Glasgow.

Learning about this club's incredible journey from its founding in 1998 to becoming the powerhouse it is today — has truly inspired me.

Establishing an independent women's football club in that era must have involved countless obstacles, yet your dedication, vision and determination not only transformed the landscape of women's football in Scotland and made a significant impact on its growth, but also created a home for players and fans who believe in the same dream.

I started playing football in my final year of junior high and later tried to form girls' teams in both high school and university back in China. Unfortunately, I failed, as there were so few girls willing to play. As a Chinese women’s football fan, I often feel a sense of helplessness, because so few people in my country pay attention to women's football, and even fewer girls are willing to play.

At times, it was disheartening but hearing your story reminded me that change takes persistence, courage, and years of hard work. You showed me that it is possible to build something meaningful even when the odds are against you.

After learning more about Glasgow City. I was deeply drawn to the club. I even have been sharing its story on Chinese social media hoping more people in my country can learn about and be inspired by this great club. Watching Glasgow City during my time here has been a true joy.

I'm proud to be part of it's community, with friendly fans and wonderful atmosphere at the Peasy that truly feels like home. Even though I will soon be leaving Glasgow, I will continue to follow and support the club from afar. and keep sharing stories about Glasgow City so more people can know and be inspired by everything you have done for women's football, and for inspiring so many people including me.

Wishing the club continued success in the seasons ahead. I will always be cheering for Glasgow City.

With gratitude and respect,

Xiyu Diao

As a club we have loved having both Xiyu and Lemeng (who you may have spotted with camera, perspex and Sharpie in hand on matchdays) become part of our family.

They will always have a place to call home in Glasgow any time they return to Scotland, and we are excited to see what they will both achieve not just for women's football but wherever their journey take them next.

Once City, Always City.
