UWCL Second Round Qualifying Match Summary: Glasgow City 0-2 FK Austria Wien

UWCL Second Round Qualifying Match Summary: Glasgow City 0-2 FK Austria Wien

City dropped out of the UEFA Champions League in the Second Qualifying Round after suffering a 2-0 defeat to hosts FK Austria Wien at the Franz Horr Stadium.

Katharina Schietchtl's free-kick from range early on in the second half and an injury-time second from Maria Olsen was the difference.

Despite the loss, City will have more European football to play for as we will enter the First Qualifying Round for the newly-introduced competition - the Europa Cup, with the draw for that taking place at 12pm (UK time) on Sunday afternoon.

Those matches will take place over two legs and are scheduled for the 10/11th September and 17/18th September.

Match action in Vienna

The hosts registered the first shot towards goal after six minutes when forward Courtney Strode was played through into the box, but she flashed her shot wide of Lee Gibson's post.

City gifted Austria Wien following some slack play at the back, but their effort was diverted behind for a corner which was cleared by Nicole Kozlova, before another set-piece came to nothing.

Against the run of play, we looked to make a burst forward for the first time in the match and Natalia Wróbel did well to win us our first corner, but it we could not make the most of the opportunity.

A great move from Emily Whelan saw her hold up possession well in the middle of the pitch, before she found Lisa Forrest down the right wing. She then tried to pick out an incoming Kozlova with a pass across the face of goal, but it was intercepted by goalkeeper Jasmin Pal, who smothered it.

A training-work move from a corner saw the hosts close out the first half with the best opportunity of the match, yet, Lena Triendl's strike went just over the bar.

Austria Wien took the lead in the 49th minute when Schiechtl struck a free-kick 30 yards out from goal, with the ball dropping into the bottom corner.

After going behind, there were few chances for both sides with City substitute Sofia Määttä registering an off-target strike with just over 10 minutes left to play.

But, our opposition did double their advantage in injury time. Losing possession in the midfield, Austria Wien hit us on the counterattack with Olsen burying a finish beyond Gibson.

It was not to be for Leanne Ross and her side in Austria, with our European focus now on the First Qualifying Round of the Europa Cup next month.
