'Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History': The Spirit Behind Glasgow City's Kit

For as long as Glasgow City Football Club has existed, we have blazed trails, fought for greater equality and continued to push the boundaries for women and girls everywhere.

Now, the essence of our values is emblazoned on the collar of our 2025/26 home kit with the phrase “Well-behaved women seldom make history” printed in purple, a nod to the suffrage movement.

First penned by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, author and educator, in an academic paper published in 1976.

The quote has since taken on a life of its own both in literature and pop culture with there being different interpretations of the phrase.

And at Glasgow City, those words are a reminder that visibility isn’t just about being seen, it is about being recorded, remembered, and valued. That’s what we’re fighting for, on and off the pitch.

They have fuelled co-founder and current Chief Executive Officer Laura Montgomery’s mission and commitment throughout her career – and she is proud it has now become a part of the club she built from the ground up alongside Carol-Anne Stewart.

“For me personally, I have used this quote for most of my life, and I think it speaks largely to who I am,” Laura explains.

“In turn, at Glasgow City we've never been afraid to challenge the status quo. As an independent, women-founded and women-led football club, we’ve spent every day since 1998 fighting for greater equality, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our sport, and creating space for women and girls to thrive, both on and off the pitch.

“Ulrich’s words capture our spirit, which is bold, unapologetic, and driven by purpose.

“And importantly I believe it honours the many women who have defied expectations to make change and speaks to our players, our supporters, and our community, who continue to do the same.”

Another new addition to our upcoming kit is the club’s original badge from 1998. Printed above the hem of the shirt, it is an important nod to City’s history and how far we’ve come since then.

It also reminds us of the journey we’ve been on, with it having been designed by co-founder Cas the badge reflects just one of the many tasks and skills she had to adopt upon running a football club.

“I did it on my very old computer,” Cas explains. “I had no idea what I was doing – it was my first experience of digital art!

“My concept was that Glasgow City Football Club would one day have four quadrants to it. Even when I was drawing that up, I thought there would be other component parts that could be included on the badge that would make up the full circle of the club – so the first team, the business, and the Academy – that was my thinking.”

The badge may have been replaced with the version that we know now in 2011, but its legacy remains an important part of who we are.

Together, the words on our collar and the original badge pay tribute to the women who built Glasgow City while also making a bold statement of where we want to go next. This kit is more than just what we wear on the pitch; it is a symbol of who we are.
